About Hanagawaya

About Hanagawaya Asakusa

Asakusa Hanagawaya is the English search name for Hanagawaya Asakusa, located in the Hanakawado neighborhood near Senso-ji Temple. The noren curtain at the entrance, wooden lattice windows and the outline of the old house preserve the quiet, human warmth of a traditional Tokyo street.

This old residence has been carefully restored and managed by a couple, who have brought Japanese living details into a space made for real stays. Tatami mats, paper lanterns, wooden textures, tea utensils and soft lighting are not arranged merely for display. They are there so that travelers can pause in Asakusa, sleep well, enjoy a cup of tea, and slowly gather themselves during the journey.

The name “Hanagawaya” carries the imagery of flowers and flowing water from haiku, as well as the spirit of ichigo ichie, treasuring each once-in-a-lifetime encounter. It does not seek exaggerated luxury. Instead, between the everyday liveliness and historical atmosphere of Asakusa, it offers a gentle, clean and reassuring Japanese-style place to stay.

AIRBNB ORIGINAL TEXTGreat easy location with lots to do. Asakusa is quite touristy but location to trains and sights made it a great vacation spot. The house was clean and perfect for our needs. 2 bathrooms felt luxurious in Tokyo and the kids enjoyed the novelty of sleeping on tatami and Japanese futons.

AIRBNB ORIGINAL TEXTWe really enjoyed the authentic feeling of Lulu’s place: this was clearly a typical home, rather than one of the many soulless custom-made rental places. Location was excellent, a super cute neighbourhood with many small izakayas and shops around, all a stone’s throw from Sensoji and surrounding park. Had some lovely morning runs along the river and sakura trees, as well as intimate late night cocktails. Asakusa is a great base for exploring Tokyo, and it’s close to Skytree if that’s on your itinerary. The place was well equipped.

AIRBNB ORIGINAL TEXTThe house was cozy yet very stylish, and it truly felt like a real Japanese home rather than a tourist-oriented accommodation. It had an authentic atmosphere that made our stay feel special and local. The location in Asakusa is fantastic — a vibrant neighborhood with a great mix of tradition and everyday Tokyo life. Senso-ji Temple is just a few minutes’ walk away, which made early morning and evening strolls especially memorable. One huge bonus was the washing machine with a dryer, which is surprisingly rare in Tokyo and incredibly convenient. Overall, a beautiful, comfortable home in an excellent neighborhood — we would happily stay here again!
